Weekly, biweekly or monthly: how often should you schedule house cleaning?

There is no single right answer to how often a home should be cleaned. Here is how household size, pets, work routines and the way you use each room point toward a weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule.

Once you decide to bring in help with the cleaning, the next question comes quickly: how often? Book too rarely and every visit turns into a catch-up session. Book more often than you need and you are paying to clean a house that is already clean. The right rhythm depends less on the size of the home and more on how the home is used.

Weekly cleaning

A weekly schedule keeps the home consistently ready. Dust, crumbs and bathroom buildup never get the chance to settle, and each visit is mostly maintenance. Weekly usually makes sense for:

  • Families with young children
  • Homes with pets that shed
  • Busy households where the adults work full-time
  • People who work from home and use the kitchen and living areas all day
  • Anyone who wants the house ready for guests at any moment

Biweekly cleaning

Every two weeks is the most popular middle ground. It works well for couples and small households that keep things tidy between visits but would rather not spend weekends scrubbing bathrooms and mopping floors. You might wipe the kitchen and run the vacuum in between, and the scheduled visit takes care of the rest. Biweekly is also a good fit for smaller apartments and condos, where there is less surface to cover.

Monthly cleaning

A monthly visit works best in homes with light use: one or two people, no pets and a habit of keeping up with daily tidying. It keeps the bigger tasks (bathrooms, floors, dusting high and low) from slipping too far behind. The trade-off is that more builds up between visits, so each clean tends to take longer than a weekly or biweekly one.

Questions that point to the right schedule

  • How many people live in the home? More people means more meals, more laundry and more foot traffic on floors and in bathrooms.
  • Do you have pets? Shedding and paw prints add up fast, especially on floors and upholstery.
  • How much time do you spend at home? Remote work and kids at home mean heavier daily use.
  • Do you entertain often? Frequent guests make a tighter schedule worthwhile.
  • What are your weekends worth to you? Cleaning a home properly takes most of a day, and it starts over the next week.

Where one-time and deep cleaning fit in

Not every need is recurring. A one-time clean can help before a family visit, after a busy season or before putting a home on the market. And if the home has fallen behind, it is usually best to start any recurring plan with a deep cleaning. That first visit brings baseboards, corners, fixtures and grout up to a baseline, so the recurring visits afterward only need to maintain it. We explain the difference in more detail in Deep cleaning vs. regular cleaning.

Adjusting along the way

A schedule is not a lifetime commitment. Many households start biweekly and move to weekly when a baby arrives or a dog joins the family, or switch to monthly during a quieter season. Seasons matter in Massachusetts, too: winter means salt, sand and wet boots at the door, while spring and fall bring pollen and leaves inside. It is perfectly reasonable to tighten the schedule for a few months and relax it again later.

Consistency matters more than frequency

Whatever rhythm you choose, what makes it work is a predictable routine. With regular cleaning from Mega Clean, a uniformed crew follows a documented checklist, the same sequence of rooms and surfaces every visit, in scheduled windows you can plan around. Weekly, biweekly and monthly plans are available, as well as one-time visits. For workplaces, the same logic applies to office cleaning on your schedule.
